Are digital backgrounds a good thing for photographers to get?
It just seems that there are so many more options with them as opposed to buying a ton of muslin backdrops. I found one on ebay from a reputable seller that I've purchased from before that is $20 for 800 digital backdrops....does that sound good??
The price seems fine... for what you are getting. That being said, are you positive that muslin or seamless paper isn't the way to go?
First, you'll have to have a green screen to do the chroma key separation. You'll need a good distance between your subject and the chroma background so that 1) you can evenly light the green screen to have it easy to "substitute" and 2) you don't have color bleed from the green screen onto the subject.
If you haven't done green screen before, you may find that it's more difficult than it seems to get right. If you are shooting small kids and babies, I doubt this will be a good solution either as you won't be able to get far enough away from the background to get separation (unless you really are skilled).
Lastly, you may have some "artifacts" when you do the substitution. Unless you are really good, big prints may be totally out of the question.
In short, it's easier to get the shot right with muslin backdrops. You don't have to worry about so much post production.
For me, 800 backdrops is a bit much. For the outdoors backgrounds, I'd prefer to shoot onsite. For simple colored backgrounds, I'll use a white seamless paper background and use gels and gobos to make it whatever color I want/need.
