I don't understand what kind of light I need to be putting there? Is it an expensive light (looks it) could I use something cheaper for a similar result?

Try white sheets to reflect light from 240v light sources.
Desk lamps, spot or flood lights, flouro light is good & defused, all are not going to put out the full spectrum of colour however. I have old flashes you can have, also some big old bulb flash reflectors for your project. You can sometimes buy A4 size (for-resh- in-L) lenses for a couple of dollars at the cheapy shops.

The weather is all over the place, if you are shooting for more than one day. Overcast should be good for softer lighting.
