Bracket Nikon

Is there a way to focus on more than one thing on the Nikon D40?
The thing is, when you press the button down half way, 1 of the 3 focus brackets will turn red, meaning that's what you're focused in on, which in turn causes everything around that to kind of blur. Which is all well and good when I am doing something like macro or portrait. But what if I'm trying to get multiple things in focus, like 2 faces or a child and his toy. I can't figure out how to do this even after reading the manual.
This is just a hobby, but I would still like to know if there is a way to focus on more than one thing without having to ONLY focus on whichever bracket is turning red. I do know how to switch the focus brackets from center to left or right. Just trying to figure out if I can get multiple.
The problem you're experiencing is called Depth of Field (DOF). DOF is defined as that area in front of and behind your subject that will be in acceptable focus. If you're shooting outdoors its easy to maximize DOF but indoors its more difficult. DOF is controlled by three things:
1) Lens focal length. The shorter the focal length the more DOF.
2) The f-stop chosen. At f16 you'll have considerably more DOF than you will at f3.5 or f5.6.
3) Subject distance. The closer your subject the less DOF, especially at longer focal lengths.
At http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html you'll find a good explanation of DOF along with a DOF Calculator. Just select your camera and then you can compute DOF for any combination of focal length, f-stop and subject distance imaginable.
Here are some examples using the 18-55mm lens.
18mm @ f3.5 focused to 10' DOF is from 6'-0'' to 30'-0''. Anything from 4'-0'' in front of your subject to 20'-0'' behind it will be in focus.
18mm @ f16 focused to 10' DOF is from 2'-6'' to infinity. Anything from 7'-6'' in front of your subject to as far as you can see (infinity) will be in focus.
55mm @ f5.6 focused to 10' DOF is from 9'-0'' to 11'-4''. Anything from 1'-0'' in front of your subject to 1'-4'' behind it will be in focus.
55mm @ f16 focused to 10' DOF is from 7'-5'' to 14'-5''. Anything from 2'-7'' in front of your subject to 4'-5'' behind it will be in focus.
You just might have to use Manual focus with your camera in Aperture Priority to get the results you want. Indoors you'll have to use the flash or a very high ISO since you're using a small f-stop (f16) which admits very little light and will result in a slow shutter speed which will cause any moving subject to blur.
