How to determine camera flash sync speed?
Does the camera sync speed automatically adjust once the flash is connected. Or is there a way to determine the quickest or best sync speed?

It will be impossible to answer this question unless you supply the make and model of the camera.

EDIT: I have read the camera manual and done an extensive search for the Rebel EOS SX camera specifications but neither the manual nor of the sites I have found had the sync speed listed. Since your camera has a focal plane shutter it is easy to test the shutter speeds to find the approximate sync speed.
To do this you will need to ~
1) Set the camera to manual shutter speed operation, attach an external flash or open your built in unit and turn the power on. If there is a lens hood/shade be sure to remove it for this test.
2) Go into a room where it is too dark to take pictures without flash, be sure your ISO value is set to 200 or lower and then compose a picture of something less than 10 feet away.
3) Use the manual settings to turn the flash on and adjust shutter speed setting to 1/60 of a second and set the aperture (f stop) to it's lowest number.
4) Take a test shot (Do not be concerned about any other settings, you are not trying to get a good exposure). You only want to see when the shutter begins to "cut off" part of the picture.
5) Review the shot. If the picture has one edge (left right, top or bottom) that is "cut off" and looks like there is a black band you have exceeded the maximum sync speed. Use the next lower shutter speed. If there is no black band continue with step 6, otherwise you have identified the highest safe sync speed as being a value between the last one that had a complete exposure and the one with the "cut off". and you are done.
6) Double the shutter speed and repeat steps 4 & 5. If you wish to test intermediate speeds use any increment between 25% ~ 75% higher speed.
Note: If you reach a speed where the shutter will not release the camera probably has an error prevention feature that keeps you from using a shutter speed that will not sync properly. Try reducing the shutter speed until the flash will fire.
