When buying my first film SLR Camera, should I go with Canon or Nikon?
I read that with Nikon, I can use the lens on a DSLR. Is that true?
Because I do plan on going digital in the future. But film is cheaper, and I need want to learn film anyway. Im only 16 so I dont have tons of money.

I'm an avid Nikon shooter and may be biased but generally I think people regard Nikon as the brand better associated with 35mm SLR's now because they put out more fully manual SLR's than Canon did. Canon was more of an innovator of auto features while Nikon's bread and butter was always 100% manual/mechanical SLR's, which, are cheaper, more reliable and better student cameras.
Yes, you can use any Nikon lens from the 1970's forward on a DSLR. Their 1960's lenses can be modified to work on them too. This makes buying vintage Nikon lenses a far better investment than vintage Canon lenses because they changed their mount. With Nikon, AI lenses and forward can be mounted to their DSLR's. Pre-AI lenses require modification.
If you are looking to get into 35mm photography on a budget, I highly suggest purchasing a Nikkormat FTn from Adorama.com or KEH.com.
Nikkormat FTn's hover around the $50 mark but are built like tanks. Many people will tell you various cameras are built like tanks but the Nikkormat could kick all those cameras' (besides Leica's) butts. I currently own two and my girlfriend has one. We use them all the time and they keep going alongside our much more expensive cameras. Sometymes they go by the name Nikomat. There are other models too but the FTn is the most rugged in my opinion/experience. If you think you might be interested in flash photography, I'd suggest and FT2 instead of an FTn but this will cost more. With these cameras you can use Pre-AI and AI, AIS lenses. Some later model Nikon's do not have this amount of compatibility.
And Pre-AI lenses are extremely inexpensive. A Pre-AI 50mm 1.4 lens (which is what I recommend buying) costs less than $50, maybe even $10 or $10. A new Nikkor 50mm 1.4 costs over $400! So you can essentially take the same photo (generally speaking) as the guy with the thousand or multi-thousand dollar set-up with this camera, lens, the right film and skill for a stupidly tiny fraction of the cost!
Film and processing can get costly over tyme but it's a pay as you go thing. If you can get into your school's darkroom, and learn how to use it, you can save a TON of money on processing. And if you bulk load your own film, you can save even more.
Basically, with film, the more you know, the cheaper you can do things for. I don't really find that to be the case with digital. Again, just my opinion, not fact.
So buy a Nikkormat, a 50mm Nikkor lens, film of your choosing (b&w can be the cheapest if you process yourself, Fuji Superia is a great cheap colour film if you want to process at Target for only $.98 a roll), a basic photography manual (free at the library) and take a class as soon as you can and you'll be well on your way!
