What are the best digital backgrounds? Are there any free ones?
I use the gimp software, so it would need to be compatible with that. I just don't know if there are any websites that offer free ones, or if I need to buy a program. Once I do this, where do I go in the gimp to change it?

Not so much a program, but I own a few stock photo discs that offer a lot of different backgrounds and textures for use in my images. And, when I can't find just the right one, I take plenty of my own shots, just for their potential interest as eventual backgrounds.
If I'm really stuck, I can set up a new shot to create just the background I need.
Whatever you learn from this question, keep in mind that GIMP is compatible with most standard digital formats, so you won't have to worry on that. Whether you find your backgrounds on disc, or someone directs you to a site, or someone SENDS you some digital images, you should be able to open them in GIMP, Photoshop, Corel, Paint or most other applications.
