The Guest Room at the base of the section of Simatai Great Wall was typical rural Chinese in its naked and without frills atmosphere. I was sicker than a dog for a week now and was really looking forward to a hot shower. It was here in March and it Simiti was very cold and windy. I checked into my room and turned on the shower. I leave the water only flows a very long time, but it does not seem to be Getting Any hotter. I checked the receipt and the clerk sent a man in my room to see about the water hot. He said not to worry there would be enough hot water in the morning. Swell. The hot shower would have to wait.
The next morning (which at 4:00 am came too quickly), I turned on the water and surprise, no water. Not even the cold water! Oh well. I bundled up, grabbed my camera gear and headed into the lobby to meet my traveling companion, Ginna Fleming, and our guide. We need our early start for us be well up on the wall and instead of shooting the sunrise. I have learned from years of travel, stock photography and assignment there no such thing as "too early", but "too late" comes in a hurry!
It was a short walk to the wall. It was too early for anyone to be around, just the two of us and our local Chinese guide. It was a village nearby. She we explained that the village had once been located here, but when the wells dry village had to travel about 4 miles away where they could find more water. She told us that village life was very difficult and guiding tourists was much easier.
We started to walk along the wall, climbed the slopes of the mountain at a steep slope. The upper wall was in fact a staircase stone and we walk up From watchtower to watchtower one step at a time. We climbed the stairs "for nearly two hours before as the sun began its own ascent into heaven.
We have moved beyond the portion of wall that tourists normally stop and warning signs passed, prohibiting us to go further ... but it was early and during the winter and there was nobody to stop us.
Here the wall had been rebuilt and was in poor condition in tatters. Our guide pointed out graffiti that men and women who built the wall so many years ago had left behind. The stones were loose and spalling and we had to watch as we walked up the structure. As the light begins to spread across the landscape, we created our tripods box and a remote section of wall that spread beneath us like a giant serpent undulating up and down the brown, barren ridges and hills.
For me it was one of those peak experiences, one of the main reasons I travel. The sense of history was almost palpable, the only sound the song of some birds. no tourists, no Hawking guides. Just this ancient wall, a magnificent view of the Chinese landscape and the cold wind pushing us as the sun struggled through the morning mist. When its rays finally reached the valley we burn and the details of the wall in the warm light I knew Photos would also stress. While I was there to create the adventure travel and stock photography, I was also there for the experience and spent several hours in the usually quiet reverence. It was not until we were on the right path down which we met anther person who quietly passed by us on his own road to the Great Wall.
Started under Qin Shi Huang to 220 BC, the first 3,000 mile section of the wall required the efforts of 70% of China's population ... more than a million peasants, prisoners and soldiers.
There are more than 10,000 watchtowers and guard towers on the Great Wall.
It really is not "unique" wall, but rather a series of walls, bricks and clay and some manufactured over a range of 2,000 years.
The stone and brick Part Ming Dynasty wall would be enough to circle the earth five feet tall!
Our guide told us that the wall had never ceased incursion. The intruders simply went around the wall or bribe guards to let them pass.
