what does the number on the slr lens means?
i saw canon EOS 400d in the market with its default lens wrote '18-55mm'. whats thet mean? an another i found out that, a simbot of flower and wrote beside it 0.9ft. whats that again?
The numbers 18-55 are the focal length of the lens. The really easy definition (and technically incorrect, but you really don't want to do the math) of focal length is the distance between the back of the lens to the focal plane (sensor). (The actual definition is distance between the rear nodal point and the film/sensor plane, but like I said, you don't wanna do the math.) This is a zoom lens. You can set it anywhere between 18, which is wide angle and 55mm which is "normal". I put this in quotes because the focal lengths are figured for 35mm format, but the camera in question is really a 24mm format so multiply them by 1.6. Again, don't bother with the math, just look through the lens and zoom in and you'll see the difference in focal length.
The flower symbol indicates macro function. You can zoom in really close to an object, such as a flower, to get a good close up. The 0.9ft is the minimum distance the sensor must be to get the picture in focus.
