Is it usually worth it to get the lens kit?
if I wanted to get a camera should I get the body only or get it with the lens kit? EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Maybe it will come in handy?
or should I save that extra couple hundred dollars and get the lens that I want?
Well, it depends. The EF 28-135mm IS is not the "typical" kit lens, and is regarded as a much better lens than a 18-55. The 18-55mm lenses kitted with canon's more entry level cameras like the rebels are limited in range and quality, but work well as they were designed specifically for entry level subframe cameras of that sort. However, the 28-135mm IS is not on that level, and are kitted with the upper echelon of subframe cameras like the 50D and 7D because it is a higher quality lens that is still cheaper than the higher quality EF-S lenses like the 15-85mm IS and 18-200mm IS, which carry higher prices. Thing is, the 28-135mm IS was originally designed as a "step-up-from-kit" lens for replacement of "full frame" kit lenses like the 28-90mm (which was a total crap lens), and is reflected in its build quality, addition of IS, and longer telephoto zoom range. So technically, the 28-135mm IS is only a "kit" lens by default because canon needed to entice buyers into getting the "kit" without the rise in price that would result in including the "new" aforementioned EF-S lenses released around the same time as (but not offered with) the new 7D - making them the new step-up-from-kit lenses for all EF-S mount subframe DSLR's, to include the entry level rebels. So yes, the 28-135 will come in handy, and is a very highly rated lens. What differentiates it from a step-up-from-kit lenses is on the wide end of the zoom range. 28mm is not wide on a subframe DSLR, it's normal. So if you need a wider angle, spend the extra few hundred on the newer 18-135mm IS, 15-85mm IS, or 18-200mm IS. If not, save your money and keep the 28-135 because it is a pretty good lens. Newcomers to digital photography often grapple with this issue, while people who have shot on film, who bring their good lenses with them often do not. Many of those folks, myself included, have already used the 28-135 and regard it as a better, non-kit lens.
