Some of my pictures appear to be very slightly off focus with my xsi?
Just got camera today, it has an 18-55mm kit lens and a 58 mm tiffen filter. I was using the camera in full auto, and at least half of my pictures are a little softer than I would prefer. What is the best way to get sharper pictures? Could it be the filter?
I do plan on using it in manual as well, but for the times when I want to use auto focus, how can I get the best results?
I agree that most digital photos do require some post processing sharpening to look their best, but this may not be your real problem.
I read it as you are using full auto focusing, correct? There are actually two aspects of "auto focus" that can be confusing to some people. Auto focus is pretty much like it sounds, the lens adjusts itself to focus on a subject. The other part of auto focus though that can, and often will, give you soft or blurred photos, is the use of auto focus point select. This is when you allow the camera to select one of the focus points. This works by the camera automatically selecting a subject in the scene that is most near the camera, and the camera will focus on that point. Problem is, that point may not be at all what YOU want to be in focus. I NEVER, NEVER use auto focus point select. You can set which point YOU want the camera to use for focus at all times. This is most often done with the center focus point. That does not mean always put your subject dead center in the middle. Nothing looks worse or more amateurish. What you do is set the camera to ONLY use the center focus point. You place this point on your subject, half press the shutter to attain focus, then while holding the shutter button half way down, recompose your shot... (focus will remain locked on your subject), then press the shutter the remainder of the way down to take the shot.
It sounds much worse than it is to do, but this is how the great majority of pros use a camera. You just cannot rely on the auto focus points to always select the correct point of focus. YOU need to control that. Using the above technique only takes a second or two.
So... bottom line... DO use auto focus,,,, but DON'T use auto focus point selection.
