which is better: Nikon 50mm f/1.8D OR Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 GED?

Wanting to do portraits and macro and have read both are good, but am stuck....
If you want to do macro, the 60mm is your only option.
Macro lenses can also be used for other stuff - it's not as though they only focus up close. And 60mm is a more appropriate focal length for portraits anyway. The G ED version is sharp when used at f/2.8, which is where you'd want to be for portraits, I assume it has decent bokeh... it should do both jobs very nicely. On DX bodies, the 50mm f/1.8 is a budget option for portraits and low light photography. If you have the cash - and since you're considering the 60mm G ED, you obviously do - there's no reason to give that particular 50mm a second thought.
If you absolutely want to shoot at larger apertures than f/2.8 you should be looking at the 50mm f/1.4 versions: the AF D and the new, more expensive AF-S. Up to f/4 they're sharper than the 50mm f/1.8. I occasionally do use a 50mm f/1.4 for portraits but mostly because it's a less intimidating lens than my other option, an f/2.8 zoom, and not because I really need f/2. (I also have a 55mm f/2.8 macro somewhere, but I haven't used it in months.)
