What is a good lens for a Nikon?
I'm in a Photography course in college, and all I have right now is the kit lens that came with my camera. I need a better lens that will let me get better quality pictures, but I'm clueless as to what I need. I know every Nikon lens can fit any Nikon camera, but thats about as far as my knowledge goes.
Can anyone suggest a good lens, aswell as the estimated cost? Thanks.
Well...it depends on what you are photographing and also to a lesser degree what camera you are using.
Lenses should be a much more careful choice than the camera body you purchase. This is because the lens is what "sees" the image and gets that information to the camera sensor. The better the quality of lens, the better the images.
I am a professional photographer using D300 bodies. My lens line up is anchored by the $1200 17-55 f2.8. This is a very sharp and fast lens. I use it for weddings, portraiture and general images. For wide angle I use a $1000 12-24 f4 Nikon lens. It isn't quite as quick being f4, but who shoots wide angle at low f-stop numbers anyway?
For a medium telephoto, there is no better lens than the AF-S 70-200 f2.8G IF-ED VR. This is an extremely fast, incredibly sharp lens. Especially if you stop it down to f4 or so. It is also quite expensive at about $1800. I also carry a 105mm macro lens and a f1.4 50mm fixed focal length lens for low light work.
As you can see, the best glass comes at a definite premium... But it is worth it. Don't get lured into the Sigma or Tamron world. They are cheaper lenses for a reason. They're cheaper!
