How do i plug my Macbook into my stereo using a digital optical audio cable?
I got a Macbook that has combined analogue/digital optical (S/PDIF) audio out. My stereo system has regular stereo speaker inputs. I'm kinda confused as to how i can take advantage of the digital optical audio on my Mac and plug it into my stereo system? It's a NAD C315BEE by the way.
You need a stereo or home theatre (theater for US..) system that has a suitable digital input. There are two types of connectors for digital audio:
1. Orange RCA sockets which carry the digital signal electrically over co-axial cable
2. TOSLINK sockets which use optical cable
Obviously, whichever type you have on the Macbook must be matched with the ones on the amplifier.
As far as I can tell, your amp does not have a digital input of any type so your quest could be over before it starts... There are converters out there that will convert one digital signal to the other (ie. RCA digital to TOSLINK optical and vice versa), but you may have to stray into the area of audio-visual equipment that could convert the digital signal back to analogue so you can play it through your stereo.
