I just got a sunpak auto 383 and I have a pentax k100d super. Are they compatible?
Can I get some kind of sync cord or a wireless trigger? What do I need?
Yes you can use it and no you don't need a sync cord or wireless trigger. Just attach it to the hot shoe. You can use a sync cord, but it is not required.
You will have to use your K100D in manual mode and set your shutter speed to a speed that is equal to or less than its flash sync speed (I believe it is 1/180 sec for the K100D). That means a shutter speed of 1/180 or SLOWER. You then set the aperture to whatever the flash says it should be. In manual mode, it is based on distance to subject. In one of the auto modes, it is a fixed aperture and the flash puts out the proper amount of light to get a good exposure under typical conditions. Try it in a dimly lit room. If only part of the frame is exposed and part is dark, use a slower shutter speed.
The most important thing to do to get successful flash photographs is to experiment and PRACTICE. Try it out indoors with the lights on and with the lights off and see what the results look like. Try it outdoors under circumstances where you would likely need the 383.
