How do multiple locomotives communicate?
When a train contains more than one locomotive, how does the lead locomotive communicate with the slave locomotives … especially when there are additional locomotives in the middle or at the rear of the train? I've heard it's by radio, but it this by radio through the air, or signals through the rails, or what? Or is there a train line of some kind that carries hardwired signals to the other locomotives?
And if it's radio, what provision is there to deal with interference or jamming? What do the slave locomotives do if they stop receiving radio control signals?
Interference with radio signals is not a problem, but deterioration is. Generally if the locomotives are separated by 8500 feet or more, then you have problems with signal degradation and it's easier to put the engines in the middle of the train. If you have multiple DPU sets, however, the signal can bounce between them and even if you have a 15,000 foot train, you can still control the rear DPU by using the middle DPU as a repeater.
