Can you tell me how to set my Canon PowerShot S5 IS to the following?
I would like to take close-up (portrait), black & white photos, through the viewfinder (not LSD screen). Indoor setting and outdoor setting please?
No nit-wit. I didn't steal the camera.
First of all, do not shoot with the camera in black and white mode. This always looks bad. You should always shoot in color as the camera was designed to do. If you want black and white, you will get far better results doing this yourself in Photoshop with channel mixer, levels, and contrast adjustments.
Do not take portraits with the lens at it's wide angle setting. If you do this, you will have to move in very close to your subject, which while invading their personal space, will also distort facial features. Zoom the lens out to about the 100mm focal length.
Have your subject as far away from any background as possible. If indoors using the built in flash, at least put some toilet paper over the flash to diffuse it some. An external hot shoe mounted flash with diffuser would be much better. Set your ISO to 400 and use Shutter Priority (Tv for time value). Set a shutter speed of 60. The camera will select the aperture. Adjust the exposure compensation as needed after viewing the histogram.
Outdoors use Aperture Priority (A) Set an aperture of 5.6. Set ISO to 100. The camera will select the shutter speed. Do not shoot under direct sun. Get in some shade and set the flash for fill flash, (the lighting bolt icon should be displayed meaning the flash will fire at all times). Lower the flash EV by one stop.
Those are some basics. I know you are wanting to learn, but you really can't do that in one of these little answer boxes. The answer above mine was harsh, but he does have a point. The place to start is with a thorough reading and studying of the owners manual. Sit down with the manual and your camera and go through the various settings and demonstrations.
The manual is not the end all teacher of course, and it cannot teach you photography anymore than anyone can do here. It is far, far more than just putting "settings" in and shooting.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to get involved in a real photography course. Approaching it like you are is only going to frustrate you and possibly sour you to photography all together. I would hate to see that happen to you. Photography is like any other skill and art, it requires some real self dedication and "digging in" and learning of things. It is not rocket science, but it IS far more involved than lots of people realize.
