what is the best profesional slr for travel photography?

like the cannon 40d ,but it is a heavy camera.
Now, while the Leica M-series is probably the best recommendation for this, it's a rangefinder not an SLR. Leica SLRs are essentially Minoltas or Panasonics in drag. You have to understand if you don't wish to get a digital rangefinder, then really all your options are going to be heavy. A camera that has to fly round the world with you, going through whatever weather conditions are prevailing needs to be tough and with toughness comes weight.
The Canon 40D is a good start, but I'd recommend the Nikon D700, Nikon D300/300s, the Olympus E-5, Canon 7D, and also Pentax K-5 over the 40D. The 40D is tough, but these cameras bring a new definition to it (and we've not got to the D3 and 1D yet, which are the tanks of the digital world, and have a weight to match). The 5D mkII should also be listed, but not for it's durability, but for it's rather amazing skill set.
The Leica M9 digital rangefinder is great, but the durability isn't tested so much (because they're so rare), and it's so bloody expensive. So realistically you have to accept that an SLR is heavy, and unsubtle but a professional has to make those sacrifices.
