How do I use an umbrella drop net?
I purchased one of my way to the pier hoping to catch my own bait. After I set it up and tied it to the pier, I tossed it in the water only to see it tip to one side and float along with the slight current kind of like a sail in the wind. A fisherman saw and suggested I tie a sinker to the middle of the net to make it drop. The same thing happened only it was slightly more underwater.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something that would magically make this work?
Umbrella nets come in 2 styles for use; saltwater and fresh water. Saltwater drop nets are mainly used to raise fish from a pier or to catch blue crabs on the shallow side of the pier.These nets are made of stronger materials and are usually wider. If you were after saltwater bait fish, this is not what you want to use. You can use a sabiki (fastest way to catch bait in current, ) a cast net, square net ( it's a mini version of a gill net that you jig up and down a pier) or a loop rig ( copper wire that is shaped in loops about 10 inches long, the fish get stuck in it trying to eat the red yarn intertwined in it.) These would be the better options in Saltwater.
For fresh water, the umbrella net is best used in 1-1 1/2 feet of water. Rig up some bait in the center and when the fish come in, you raise the net fast. The fastest way to raise the net would be to attach a pole to the main line and using leverage against the pier to raise the net faster. The net has to raise straight up to be effective. You could also use these nets in saltwater but only in the shallow end as I described to catch the small bait fish and crabs.
All in all, that "magic" you're looking for could be as simple as using the net as it's designed to be used. ~good luck catchin'
